Lynda
Welcome to our December 2011 newsletter. Since January of this year (and as of this mailing), we’ve published or updated more than 270 courses (more than 1,000 hours of new content), launched six new series, and produced four Creative Inspirations documentaries! This month, we top off the year with a new selection of audio software and skills courses, online and email marketing courses, and much more. We’re grateful to have been a part of your learning in 2011, and look forward to more in 2012!

Tune into the Audio channel

The audiophiles here at lynda.com are excited to release a series of new audio courses, with many more in the pipeline.

The course offers recommendations for setting up an optimal listening environment, highlights the most efficient ways to set up and balance a mix, and shows how to build a powerful sound with compression.

We’ll be covering the key Virtual Instruments in Logic Pro. In this month’s installment, Brian Trifon shows how to improve your production with the ES M Monophonic Synthesizer and ES E Ensemble Synthesizer.

As a thank-you to our members and friends, we’ve made the Pro Tools 10 New Features course available freely to all. David Franz helps you transition to the new version of Pro Tools seamlessly.

Testimonials of the month

Best $25 I spend
Just wanted to let you guys know that I really get a lot of value from my monthly subscription to lynda.com. Your training has been very helpful. The courses are very good and the instructors are even better. It also helps to get the newsletter so I know about new or featured courses. You definitely make me feel like my subscription is the best $25 a month I spend in my budget.
—Don M.

Thanks for transcripts
I wanted to share with you my appreciation for the inclusion of transcripts in the training materials! I’ve belonged to lynda.com for years and been very happy with my training, but since having meningitis and a stroke, retaining what I hear has been difficult. However, with the addition of being able to read along, I am retaining as before. Thank you so much!
—Kathryn J.

Tip of the month

Tip of the Month

You can choose from four different metering modes, depending on the scene you’re trying to capture.

Metering modes from Shooting with the Canon Rebel T3i (600D and Kiss X5)

Accurate metering is critical to getting good results from your camera. Fortunately, metering technology is so good that your camera should yield correct exposure 80 to 90 percent of the time. To help ensure that your exposures are good, though, your camera offers several metering modes, some of which might be more appropriate for one type of situation than another.

To change the metering mode on the Rebel T3i, press the Menu button and go to the second shooting menu. Metering mode is third from the top, and displays your current metering mode. Hit the Set button to display all of the available modes.

Evaluative metering divides your scene into a grid, meters each cell of the grid, and then averages all of those results together to come up with a single overall exposure setting.

Partial metering meters a circular area that covers about 6.5 percent of the middle of the frame. It’s good for portraits or backlit situations, such as someone sitting in front of a window.

Spot metering meters only a very small circle in the middle of the frame. It covers about 2.8 percent of the viewfinder. You’ll use this mode in times you’re facing a high dynamic range situation, when you need to be absolutely certain that you have detail in one particular spot.

Center-weighted average metering is like Evaluative metering, but more statistical weight is given to the center of the frame when all of the various meterings are being averaged together. It’s good for backlit situations, but Partial metering probably works better in that scenario.

For most of the scenes, Evaluative metering will work fine. In fact, you may find that you never change your metering mode from Evaluative. If you do change your mode, be sure to go back to a metering that’s appropriate for the rest of your shooting after you get your shot.

If you’re interested in finding out more about metering, this topic is covered in detail in Foundations of Photography: Exposure.
